Concealed Handgun Permit (CCW) Information

How long is a Colorado CCW permit valid?

Under C.R.S. 18-12-204 (1)(b), a concealed handgun permit is valid for five years from the date of issuance. If you move out of Colorado, you must submit a change of address form and surrender your permit to the local sheriff’s office, as it will become invalid once you are no longer a state resident. Failure to notify the sheriff’s office of an address change is a Class 1 petty offense.

What if I move within Colorado?
If you change your address within Colorado, you must notify the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in writing within 30 days. A change of address form is available on the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office website https://www.epcsheriffsoffice.com/. Failure to update your address is also a Class 1 petty offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

To clarify, you cannot simply get a generic guard card to work security in Colorado. Each municipality or county has its own licensing requirements. Some areas have no formal licensing program, while others — such as Colorado Springs, Denver, Pueblo, and certain government entities — do. In these locations, you cannot just apply for a license on your own; you must be sponsored by a licensed security company. While you can complete training independently, that training must ultimately be approved.

At Pikes Peak Security, we provide excellence-driven protection through a variety of services:

  • Event Security
  • High-risk Employee Termination
  • Incident Prevention
  • On-Site Security
  • Residential and HOA Security
  • Workplace Violence Protection

Providing top-of-the-line security means that we do not cut corners. That includes ensuring protection on all fronts, which is why Pikes Peak Security is fully licensed and insured.

At Pikes Peak Security, we believe that when it comes to protecting others, experience is essential. Our commitment to only hiring security guards with law enforcement and military experiences proves that. It takes a special individual to put themselves in harm's way for another, we happen to only hire and employ security guards who are willing to do just that.

Pikes Peak Security has a very stringent hiring requirement for all personnel. We do not hire just anyone at our company; anyone working for us must come from a military, law enforcement, or security background of at least 3 years. Because of the nature of some of the work we do, we are very strict on hiring

At Pikes Peak Security, we have high standards. Trained for excellence, our security guards are required to attain a variety of certifications through over 100 hours of training to ensure they can handle any threat to safety. Here’s what you can count on our guards for:

  • Arrest control
  • Crowd control
  • Firearms skills
  • First aid and basic lifesaving skills
  • Use of force

All of our guards are certified in firearms, we follow the curriculum of a few NRA courses, and we also incorporate several hours of training in dynamic scenarios that each guard could face in real life. Also, our guards are trained in less-than-lethal options such as Taser and OCAT for those circumstances that may be needed. Finally, although we hope to never have to utilize it, a handcuffing Technique called PATH is taught nationally. All PPS training standards are reviewed annually and assesed to make sure we are on top of our game at industry standards. At PPS, we believe in high-quality training, which makes for high-quality performance.

While security guard and security officer are oftentimes used interchangeably, they are not the same thing. The main difference between the two is that while a security guard is usually unarmed, a security officer carries a firearm while on duty. At Pikes Peak Security, we offer both security guard and security officers services depending on the needs of our clients.

At Pikes Peak Security, we utilize innovative technology to monitor and manage our security guards while they are on duty. The implementation of this technology allows us to ensure thorough protection of our clients and our security guards.

Our founders have a combined 18 years of experience in the military before starting Pikes Peak Security, which has been proudly protecting our community for over 8 years.

At Pikes Peak Security we understand that safety starts with support. Our team is dedicated to providing excellent customer service to all of our clients to ensure that they feel protected and equipped for safety.

PPS primarily specializes in armed security guard services. Although we understand that some jobs do not require guards to be armed, the deciding factor comes down to the risk associated with the job expectations and the assumption of risk associated.
All of our guards are trained to the highest caliber of Armed Status. We understand that each client's needs are different, but we do not assume high-risk assignments unarmed.

We utilize patrol software for guard reporting procedures and various law enforcement equipment to help collaborate with various entities. We believe innovation is the key to being more successful.

When we meet with clients and understand their needs, we create post orders to meet their intent and pass that on to each client to review their expectations. Once approved, we then execute the plan using various processes and equipment.

Go to our website and reach out on the contact us sections or you can call our office, and someone will get you the information you need.

Pikes Peak Security tailors pricing to each client needs, risk and overall expectations. However, Pikes Peak Security is not a low budget provider and some clients may not be a good fit for us if they want low-cost services. When it comes to scheduling we may be able to accept and schedule your project in quick manner however, depending on the project it may take several days before we can commit.

There are multiple processes of how to become a guard in Colorado. Unlike a lot of states, we do not have one state license. We have multiple license requirements per various locations we work in. For example, the city of Colorado Springs requires all guards to be sponsored by an employer and complete 8 hours of Basic Security Officer Training, 16 hours at a minimum of Firearms Training, 20 hours if you want to be able to conceal. These are the minimum training requirements for Colorado Springs. In order to get licensed in Denver you also must be sponsored and must complete the mandatory 16 hours of Basic Security Guard Training and the optional firearms training requirements if your agency requires you to be armed. There are many other locations in Colorado that have company and or individual guard requirements. It’s best to contact the security company you are interested in and ask what they require to become licensed with them.

At PPS we look at each person as a family member not a number. We are generally very flexible and understanding. We do understand that life happens and willing to adapt however, we ensure and meet the clients needs. We enjoy what we do and try to make this a family environment.
